Policies to address depression and affective disorders remain inadequate, despite the increase in indicators of depression and other mental health problems, even when a national legislative framework and evidence-based guidelines are in place. Some difficulties for clinical psychology personnel to work at the first level of care have been related to this, for example, healthcare pathways that do not consider this discipline as an initial step to enter the healthcare system.
This article aims to highlight the importance of clinical psychology at the primary care level, beyond the achievement of clinical outcomes, in the processes of continuity of care, the work environment and in economic terms. We present some figures related to depression and its approach. Finally, we propose arguments to include, from the Colombian health system, clinical psychology as one of the articulating disciplines and gateway to the mental health care pathway.
